  1.  Improvising:  Getting brave enough to make mistakes and empowered enough to make decisions.  Process!  “We get to make stuff up!?”

  2.  Developing: Time must be given to incubate ideas, reflect, and change. Parameters are important so students will be able to focus.  Often when students choose a title for their work the project takes flight.

  3.  Refining:  Students must feel safe to choose and stand by decisions. No “right” answer is an uncomfortable concept for some students and teachers. Support and acceptance is vital. 


  1.  Sound/Composing Apps

  Nice for background music for poetry or art activities.
Continuous looping good for accompaniment to improvising.

  

GarageBand: May be used to record student compositions.  Teacher may create a loop to accompany improvisations.  Start with one chord, then two (Ex: G and Em  or  C and Am), then 12-bar Blues.

   Import MIDI files (.mid) and turn into notation. Often need a little cleaning up, but still cool.   Note entry, too.

For today’s session I used Splashtop on my laptop and iPad, so I could move around the room.  Trial for 7 days is free if you want to see if it works for you.  You might need permission to download and install on your presentation computer if it is school property.
